Retrofit at Schmolz+Bickenbach leads to the new modern sar@mes warehouse management system
Schmolz+Bickenbach AG is a steel group based in Lucerne (Switzerland).
A 30-year-old warehouse management system was replaced at the site in Bronschhofen (Switzerland).
The old system had served us well for 30 years, but the procurement of spare parts was becoming increasingly difficult and the speed was no longer up to date.
Fast order processing, optimal routes
If the framework conditions in the supply chain change, the system has to adapt.
At Schmolz+Bickenbach, the new system is based on a modern PLC with sar@mes for planning optimal routes and fast order processing.
The hardware could continue to be used.

The material is managed via SAP and also requested from there.
Four overhead conveyors retrieve containers from a high-bay warehouse and transport them to airlocks.
In the airlocks, the containers are either loaded with new material or material required for further processing is unloaded.
The system verifies all actions with a scale and transmits the data to SAP.
The new warehouse management system has been successfully in operation since spring 2019.
Improved work quality and speed
sar@mes was implemented within a few days.
Production then started and successfully met the daily target.
The solution significantly improved efficiency and user-friendliness.
With the help of the software, employees were able to improve the quality and speed of their work.
In the background, SAR ensures seamless communication with the SAP system and guarantees a high level of security.
The goal of optimizing delivery routes was achieved.
