Major energy transition project in Switzerland

Process and environmental technology successfully completes major energy transition project in Switzerland

On the road to climate neutrality by 2050, the city of St. Gallen is pursuing the goal of completely eliminating fossil fuels from its district heating supply.
The thermal waste treatment plant of the City of St. Gallen (the waste-to-energy plant – KHK) is the most important supplier of district heating for the city.
The flue gas cleaning plant of the KHK St. Gallen was built in 1987.
After 30 years of operation, many components have now reached their expected service life.
Entsorgung St. Gallen has therefore decided to comprehensively renew the flue gas cleaning system (RGR).
The new RGR of the KHK Gallen takes over the flue gases from 2 parallel incineration lines.
The flue gas is cleaned of acidic pollutants and heavy metals by means of a 2-stage dedusting process (electrostatic precipitator + fabric filter) and the injection of sorbents.
The purified flue gas is then transferred to the downstream denitrification system.
Blowers transport the gas from the boiler to the chimney.
In August 2021, SAR was commissioned by the St. Gallen waste disposal authority to plan, supply and commission the complete electrical and process control equipment for the new flue gas cleaning system and the associated accompanying measures.
The project was successfully completed at the end of January 2023.

8000 working hours

Around 8,000 accident-free working hours were spent on this project by our colleagues in control cabinet construction, electrical planning, software engineering, commissioning and project management.
After the coronavirus pandemic made project implementation more difficult in 2021, in 2022 it was the long and sometimes unpredictable delivery times for components that posed a major challenge for everyone involved in the project.
Despite all the difficulties, the switchover to the new flue gas cleaning system was completed on schedule at the beginning of November 2022.

Support for Special Olympics Switzerland

We would like to take this opportunity to thank a long-standing employee of KHK St. Gallen, Mr. Reto Büchler, for his constant support and willingness to help.
He volunteers as a coach for the Special Olympics Switzerland cycling team.
SAR was able to support the team’s participation in the 2023 World Summer Games in Berlin with a small donation.
We wish Reto and his team an unforgettable event in Berlin and, of course, every success!
